The bat ear, or "Dumbo ear" as it is popularly known, normally causes nuisance and embarrassment. The problem is usually congenital and it can be corrected through a relatively simple plastic surgery. The intervention can be performed from the first months of life, but the ideal is to wait until the child reaches the age of seven. To better understand this problem, learn that there are three types of deformity, collectively referred to as bat ears. The patient can have a very big internal part of the ear (shell), absence of the upper fold, or still have a very open angle between the head and the ear. In all these cases, the best solution is a surgical intervention. Before the surgery, the physician will request laboratory tests to find out if there are any problems with anesthesia or sensibility to some products. In general the surgery is carried out with local anesthesia, except children who receive general anesthesia and need to spend the day in the hospital. In the first day after the surgery the patient's head is completely bandaged, with only the face uncovered. The next day all the dressings can be taken away, and the patient can take a shower and even wash the head. The only special care is to use a headband, tennis player or ballet dancer type, during bedtime for thirty days. The headband prevents the ear from folding when in contact with a pillow. The best thing is that, besides the surgery to be simple, the scar is hidden behind the ear.
